On May 5th the painting ‘A Botanical Tablet’ by Shirley Ann Nunn, commissioned in memory of pharmacist Harry Burlinson, was presented on loan to the School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences in Manchester. The painting, donated to Pharmacist Support in 1993 (then known as The Benevolent Fund) hung in the Charity’s convalescent home at Birdsgrove House. Following the sale of the property in 2006, Charity Trustees and Society Museum staff sought a new home for the painting. After much deliberation, it was decided that a move back up to Manchester where Harry spent much of his working life was a fitting one.
Following Harrys death in 1988 friends and colleagues of his local Manchester branch launched an appeal to present a memorial painting to the Charity. As a knowledgeable authority and author on tableting, a botanical artist (Shirley Ann Nunn) was commissioned to produce a fitting tribute to the respected and well-loved fellow. The result - A Botanical Tablet - is a beautiful watercolour depicting medicinal plants and ingredients used in tableting. The painting depicts a range of raw materials used in tablet manufacture. The plants portrayed include sources of isolated chemical entities still used pharmaceutically such as digoxin, vincristine, the opiates and atropine, and also major formulation aids (excipients), notably flavours and waxes.
Recipient Brian Lockwood, Director of Pharmaceutical Industrial Advanced Training thanked the RPSGB Museum staff for their assistance with the transfer. He commented, “Times have changed since the picture was envisaged and painted, but the sentiment is still here, Manchester is still a centre of excellence in the Pharmaceutical Sciences. I hope that Harry and his widow, Mildred, who commissioned the painting and those of you that knew Harry are pleased that the picture has returned to its natural home, Pharmacy in Manchester!”
