The trustees

David Thomson (Chairman)

David qualified as a pharmacist in 1978 and is currently Deputy Lead for Community Pharmacy Development for NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Board. He was (up until separation) a Member of Council, RPSGB and is currently a member of RPS Pharmacy Board for Scotland.  He is currently on the Editorial Board of Pharmacy Management and previously chaired the RPSGB Staff Support Group. He has had a long association with Pharmacist Support and its predecessor and currently chairs the charity's Board of Trustees. In his spare time David is also involved with the Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists; UKCPA; is a member for West of Scotland Branch RPS Local Implementation Group.

Dr Leonard Brookes (Treasurer)

Following pre-reg training at the Royal Free, Leonard moved to Beecham Research Labs, then onto Chelsea College to read for his PhD before emigrating to the U.S. to undertake research at Stanford University. He returned to big pharma (UpJohn) and, subsequently, small pharma, as Director of R&D, maintaining engagements/interactions with many universities and other institutions world-wide. Since 1998 Leonard has been an independent consultant to the bio/pharmaceutical industry. Professionally, he has been a local Branch Chairman, a co-founder and elected member of the Industrial Pharmacists’ Group and maintains an active interest in community pharmacy.

Prof Denis Anthony

Since 1999 Denis has been Professor of Nursing at De Montfort University. He semi retired in 2011 but continues to work one day a week for DMU. He has also been working with the Oxford Health Alliance in projects concerning smoking prevention. Denis trained as a mental health nurse and adult (medical-surgical) nurse. However in mid-career moved across into engineering and computing (1987-1994) before returning to academic nursing.

Steve Churton

Since registration in 1980, Steve has enjoyed a career devoted to pharmacy, working exclusively during this period for Boots. He has held many senior level appointments spanning general management, human resources, marketing, commercial management and business development. In 2007 he was elected to the Council of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and appointed its President in 2008. Steve was made a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in November 2009 for his contribution to the practise of pharmacy. Now retired Steve is chairman of the board of trustees of the Pharmaceutical Trust for Educational and Charitable Objects (an organisation devoted to funding research). He is also a governor of the College for the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and a trustee of the Psoriasis Association.

Richard Fass

Richard is a Chartered Accountant. He has a strong background in finance and was previously Managing Director of the Jewish Chronicle Newspaper as well as Head of Finance of the Alzheimer's Society.  He is currently a Non-Executive Director of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust. Richard is the Treasurer of The Centre for Mental Health (a think tank) as well as a Trustee of Swanswell (a drugs and alcohol charity based in Rugby).

Prof David Johns

David trained and practised as an aerospace engineer during his industrial and academic career. He became Foundation Director of the (now) City University of Hong Kong; and, prior to “retirement”, Vice Chancellor at Bradford University. Subsequent appointments have included, as Chair, the Prescription Pricing Authority, a Strategic Health Authority, the Genetics and Insurance Committee and a Regional Advisory Committee for Clinical Excellence Awards; and, as a Lay Member, GMC, PMETB, Faculty of General Dental Practice; and the Executive Committee of e-DEN [part of e-Learning For Health]. In 1998 David was appointed CBE for services to Higher Education.

Doreen Laity

Doreen spent her working life in the pharmaceutical industry and the Medicines and Healthcare product Regulatory Agency. She was with the Agency for over 30 years as an inspector, assessor, Superintendant Pharmacist, Group Manager in Licensing, Principal Assessor to the (then) CSM and Medicines Commission and Director of Information Management when she retired a few years ago. She has also been Honorary Secretary and Chair of her local branch.

Prof Peter Noyce

Peter has been Professor of Pharmacy Practice at The University of Manchester since 1991, which has included spells as Head of School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Director of the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE).  His contribution to health services research concentrated on community pharmacy, although more recently it is focusing on the development, performance and regulation of the pharmacy workforce.  In late 2011, he was appointed Co-Chair of the Modernising Pharmacy Careers Programme Board of Medical Education England (MEE).   He was formerly Deputy Chief Pharmacist for England, and also a member of the Medicines Commission.  Peter was awarded the Charter Gold Medal of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 2004, and was conferred a CBE for services to healthcare in 2008.

Arthur Williams

After registration as a pharmacist Arthur entered National Service (RAMC) with postings in UK and Cyprus. He began his NHS career in 1957 at Manchester Royal Infirmary. As Chief Administrative Pharmaceutical Officer to several Health Boards he had responsibilities for hospital and community pharmacy together with public health duties. During his career Arthur served as local branch Secretary and Chairman. At the national level he was Professional Secretary and President of The Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists. Arthur has many published papers and is co-author of two text books for nurses. In 1991 he was appointed OBE and was awarded the Fellowship of RPSGB.
